Tooth protection is vital, and mouth guards are an important preventative measure for those involved in contact sports such as rugby, hockey and boxing. Not only do they prevent broken teeth, but they can also stop damage to jaws and bone. We’ve seen many patients with significant injuries that could have been prevented if they had worn a mouth guard. The dental rehabilitation these patients experienced took, in some instances, many months.
At Seymour Dental we carefully fit the right mouth guard model to your mouth. You can choose the colour and each guard is labelled with the owner’s name.
Dentures are removable appliances that fill spaces in your mouth with teeth and gums. They are less expensive than bridges and implants. The two main types of dentures are full and partial.
A full denture replaces all the teeth in a jaw. In the upper jaw the full dentures usually relies on suction. In the lower jaw the full denture relies on the bite and muscle manipulation to hold it in the mouth. Sometimes we leave specially prepared root stumps in the jaw and have the denture sit over it. When you loose teeth you also loose bone. By keeping the roots you keep bone which allows the denture to hold better. We can even put attachments in the roots to improve the situation. Implants and mini implants that can be placed into the bone with attachments, are excellent in holding full dentures especially in the lower jaw.
A partial dentures usually relies on the remaining teeth to hold in the mouth. This is achieved with metal clasps on these teeth. Partial dentures are usually made with a metal or plastic framwork. A metal framework is casted and stronger than the plastic variety but relies on teeth to be held in place. A plastic denture also relies on its fit on the gum. Plastic
dentures can also be easily modified if say a tooth is lost. The same methods of attachments with roots & implants we use for full dentures can also be used with partial dentures.
Another type of partial denture uses flexible plastics. This means the plastic can bend around teeth and gums and not need metal clasps. Even though we try to hide any clasps from being notice, this type denture makes a lot easier. They can even be used to replace lost teeth on one side of the mouth without using the other side of the jaw to hold the denture in place.
At Seymour Dental we can discuss all the options as part of an overall treatment plan, as dentures are only as good as the mouth they are built in!
