Dentist at Large – Polynesian Culture – Part 2

October 14, 2024

After the Sea, we visited culture, the Polynesian Cultural Centre, about 30 minutes up the east coast of Oahu north of Kahlua Ranch.

Nesia’ comes from the Greek and means ‘Islands’: Indonesia means ‘Indian islands’ (Indonesia was once known as the Indian Archipelago).

For other macro-level island groups of the Pacific, “Micronesia” means the “small islands,” while “Polynesia” means “many islands.”

In Greek language, “melan” or “mela” means dark or black, while “nesia” refers to islands.  So, Melanesia refers to the dark or black islands.  These islands have the natives of very dark skin and hair, there by the connection of the place name is with the physical appearance of the native peoples.  Of course, skin tone does not suggest a single culture.  Instead, the cultures of Melanesia are diverse and numerous.

The centre featured cultures from

  • Hawaii.
  • Aotearoa (New Zealand) …
  • Fiji. …
  • Samoa. …
  • Tahiti. …
  • Tonga. …
  • Rapa Nui (Easter Island)

Incidentally, Tonga is the only monarchy in the Pacific and the only pacific nation never to fully lose its indigenous governance. Also known as “The Friendly Islands” it consists of 171 coral and volcanic islands spread over 747 sq km with 48 of those inhabited.

The symbolic story of Mana and his beloved Lani, enhanced by Polynesian dance, music and blazing fireknives. This stunning evening show features over 100 Polynesian natives, special effects, animation and surround sound. It is a Pacific Isle saga of birth and death, love and family, tragedy and triumph.

After a late evening, we were again up early to explore more of the Kualoa Ranch and the rest of the island’s North Shore and its turtles!
