We are now on the island of Oahu and, after figuring how to drive a Dodge on the wrong side of the road, with a GPS device falling of the dashboard, we made it to Kualoa Ranch. Ranch. This was made famous for where Jurassic Park was filmed. It’s an expansive private ranch next to the national park and extends to the coast.
Our visit today was to take a long boat trip across the The Moli’I Hawaiian Fishpond, then to a catamaran trip into the coastal bay and out into the ocean.
This large fishpond, which still in use today, was created by the natives to use the tidal flow to trap fish into the man-made pond. The trapped fish fed on fish and other foods that then washed into the pond. The fish became large and eventually fished by being trapped by a sea gate that they would try to use to escape out the pond.
Sometimes a submarine was trapped for filming!
Then we left the pond to travel out the bay to pass Mokoli’i island looking for turtles and manta ray. We also enjoyed being drenched by the waves hitting the front of the catamaran when we met the ocean.
Then at lunch time we travelled further north to the Polynesian Cultural Centre where we had a guided tour of the various cultures, dinner and a show.
See, found a dental twist!
