Dentist at Large – Hawaii – First Holiday in 5 Oh years

September 30, 2024

Yes, the play on words on the famous police TV show, Hawaii 5O. For those that don’t understand 5O, that’s the emergency police number.

Why did we end up in Hawaii, more in particular the island of O’ahu and its state capital, Honolulu?

Well, my son was invited to the world Pokémon card game Master’s championship at the Honolulu Convention Centre. It’s a big deal. He is one of 300 from the Oceana region, and 1 of 1,500 players representing some 68 countries over 3 days. There was a Junior and Senior school section, and Pokémon Go, and other electronic forms of the game. Altogether, over 2,500 players. More on that later.

Sunset at Waikiki Beach on our First Day

Our last holiday was interrupted in 2020 with Covid after a day and a half, so more than 5 yrs since out last proper holiday. We skipped the winter for summer on the other side of the planet after a 9 and a ½ hour trip. Surf’s up!

Being a dentist at large means there has to be dental angle somewhere at Hawaii; I’ll find it, more on that later….

Coming in at 6am meant we arrived at dawn. We opted to see Pearl Harbour and the Arizona memorial as well as the sites of Honolulu. We passed the last King of Hawaii (and the only King ever to be in the USA).

Then travelled to Pearl Harbour to the memorial of the destruction of the Arizona warship bringing the USA into the second World War. The watery tomb is reminder of the total loss of life in a split second in the surprise attack. The entire USA pacific fleet was in port as a show of strength to the Japanese. They remained too long in port which gave the Japanese the opportunity to avoid radar detection and attack.

No-one survived the blast on the warship, however, the shipmates that were lucky enough not to be on duty on the warship “survived”. However, many were haunted by the loss of their shipmates. So much so, that they wanted to be interred with them on their passing.

After the tour, we were able to check in to the hotel. Finally! Then, we ventured forth to enjoy the orange hued sunset and foraged for food. Sleep beckoned while we were standing on our feet…
