The human response was to save lives. The genome of the virus was mapped out at Sydney University in 2 weeks flat. Amazing! The hunt now was to produce a vaccine.
There was quarantining of nations, travel, location and people. We all had to change our behaviour to save ourselves form each other. Of course, not everyone agreed with the emergency conditions and vaccines. I would not like be one the decision maker. You do not always have the time or the resources to do double blind studies on every decision. A lot of decision were based on the last pandemic of 100 years ago.
Remember the virus is trying to survive too. Its like working with the “shifting sands”. It’s mutating. People will do what they want to do at the detriment of others. So, the permutations of decision making are endless!
The decision makers, scientists, health professional are responsible for the actions. The criticisers are not. There is no repercussion for their actions.
So, this is the Covid world we live in.
Vaccines were made and given. There are divisions in the community and court cases are on going (where only the lawyers win). It’s always easy to criticise in hindsight.
Meanwhile, for now, the virus has survived in a form that has become part of the life of the host. An annoying irritant but mostly not a killer.
The question is would the virus become this, with or without human intervention, and at what cost?
We really do not know.
All I can say with certainty, that the Spanish Flu disappeared, by itself, with no vaccine or direct human intervention. The cost was 25 million people.
When you get Covid once it DOES NOT mean you won’t get it again. In fact, it can be worse the second time around.
There are sometimes long term after affects, often called Long Covid. It can be very debilitating in some susceptible people.
