Dry Mouth – An Update

May 13, 2024

Of late there have been a number of patients coming with dry mouth as result of cancer treatment and other conditions. In one particular patient, the flavouring of tooth paste, particulary mint, would set off a very raw and hypersentive reaction, bordering on burning (hyperthesia).

Dry mouth is awful.

The saliva is affected by this state. Saliva is important to taste, swallowing, speech, decay prevention, and the quality of the enamel & gums.

It also acts as buffer to acidity and aids in digestion of food.

Bad breath will occur as the watery type of saliva is reduced and more mucus is produced. Bacteria love this stuff, hence the odour.

The treatment of dry mouth is a very difficult as we can’t, as yet, bottle a recreation of a person’s saliva.

All we can do is supply a saliva subsititue such as Biotene.

Or we can stimulted salive production. Such as chewing gum. Below is a product that has many ingredients to help the often debilitating dry mouth condition.

Chewing Recaldent® Advanced sugar-free gum with long lasting flavours helps stimulate saliva flow.

Saliva keeps our mouths healthy and is nature’s way of protecting our teeth.

Why choose Recaldent® Gum?

  • Stimulates saliva flow
  • Sugar-free
  • With RECALDENT (CPP-ACP) casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate

Recaldent® Advanced chewing gum contains PHENYLALANINE. Excess consumption may have a laxative effect. Do not use if you have allergy to cow’s milk proteins or soybean derived products.

Another product below, is a special type of tooth paste that helps with the acidity and soothes the mouth and protects the teeth. The fruit salad variety of Dry Mouth Gel seems to be the mildest flavouring in the range.

Dry Mouth Gel is a unique, sugar free product designed to help relieve dry mouths and provide long lasting comfort and a soothing effect for patients.

Uniquely, unlike most saliva substitutes, Dry Mouth Gel has a neutral pH, meaning that effective symptomatic relief can be provided, whilst preserving oral pH within the safe range to prevent demineralisation.

Why choose GC Dry Mouth Gel?

  • Provides up to 4 hours of relief from symptoms of dry mouth
  • Has a near neutral pH providing effective symptomatic relief while preserving the oral pH in the safe range to prevent demineralisation
  • Does not interfere with the action of fluoride products or GC Tooth Mousse
  • Sugar free
  • Available in 5 delicious flavours: Raspberry, Mint, Orange, Lemon, Fruit Salad

Indications

  • Mouth-breathing during sleep
  • Drug-induced dry mouth from medication
  • Conditions which can impair salivary flow such as Sjogrens’s syndrome, patients undergoing radiation therapy, diabetes mellitus, chronic hepatitis C and connective tissue auto-immune diseases

Please seek expert dental and medical assessment of the causes of the dry mouth.
