This is a case study of how intra-oral cameras can be used to show the progress of healing and to exhibit a lesion and how to manage it. This patient presented with extremely puffy overgrown gums and very painful and bleeding tissue surrounding the teeth out of all proportions to what would be a normal picture of an irritated gum.
Surgery was performed to remove the extremely irritated, overgrown gums and suture to enable proper healing of the tissue to a normal shape. It was a very unusual situation, and the exact cause was never really determined.
After two weeks the surgery site shows, with the intra-oral camera, no more bleeding of the gums and the tissue has a normal consistency, showing a nice pale pink colour as opposed to being a bright red puffy inflamed tissue.
The x-ray shows how the tissue, in a cross-sectional view, looks in a normal situation. So the camera showed the extent of the lesion which determines what treatment was to be done, to ensure that the irritation was removed, (if we knew what it was), but to also ensure that the tissue was put into a shape that it was easy to maintain, i.e. to ideally be self-maintaining.
Now we continue to monitor the situation, and with the camera, we can compare what it was before, how it healed and to make sure we pick up changes early. Treatment would be used to intervene to prevent the situation happening again.
Healing is a barometer of a person’s general health. The images help us determine that a person has healed correctly. If not, then we may need to do further investigations. Such examples include low levels of Iron Vitamin B12 diabetes, anaemias, lung problems, heart issues and so on.
