Happy New Year – Highlights of 2023 – Part 2 – April to June

January 15, 2024

April

An eventful mouth with the paramedics coming very quickly after the second call due to the change in breathing and her confused state the following blog –

The paramedics then asked her questions like her date of birth, which had great difficulty to answer. By this time they connected a monitor that checked her heart rate, pulse and oxygen levels.

A pin prick test to check the sugar levels in her blood was done.

They checked her bag for medications, such as angina tablets, or diabetic medication.

Their main concern was her confusion was worsening. However, she was still conscious.

So they took her away into the ambulance to hospital.

Ambulance has arrived

Now in April, after sunset during Ramadan, Lakemba’s main street swells with thousands of people of all ages, mostly from Muslim majority countries. They come to break their fast, catch up with family and friends and generally enjoy the evening.

In amongst all of this some followers of Jesus from across Sydney organised a “Peace Tent” in Lakemba. Each night a couple of pop-up cabanas are set up, decked out beautifully with cushions and low seating, as a coffee/chai lounge complete with low lighting, Turkish delight and sweet dates.

One leader at the Peace Tent wisely said that, “The only Muslim you have to understand is the Muslim sitting opposite you”. That is true not just in cross-cultural experiences of sharing Jesus but in any situation!

Easter is celebrating the Prince of Peace.

With the change in the world due to Covid, people have become very stressed causing another pandemic – the grinding teeth –

There has been a lot of gnashing of teeth during this Covid pandemic. Health, work, political, social, family and economic issues have caused upheavals in all our lives.

These effects on our normal way of life up have caused many of us to grind our teeth. The proper term is bruxism.

The problem with the Covid grind is that affects the teeth, muscles, joints and eventually the psyche. Seeking professional help is very important and life changing.

May

At the Dawn Service at Coogee beach, a powerful reminder of the sacrifice of the young men who went to Gallipoli was shown with a live stream from the beach. An Afghan veteran was shown sitting on the beach with a spot light on him. He was surrounded by red poppy flowers and with the sound of the waves crashing on the shore he began to read a letter.

Letter being read from a young soldier to his Mother before shipping out Gallipoli

A son writing to his mother before being shipped out Gallipoli. He tells her not worry about him as by chance if I die, I die knowing that I am a soldier serving to protect my country. I am single, but worry about those who are fathers, brothers, and husbands who have family that will be left behind.

Lest We Forget

Further into May we discussed Shaping and Repairing Teeth – A Case Study. The case shown was caused by a heavy bite and altered chewing patterns. This caused the patient wear down the adjacent right tooth and half wear incisal edge of the left tooth the left. This treatment resulted in a more natural appearance, confirming to the patient’s current bite. Check out the blog to see how it was done.

Then we said Farewell to Sue After More Than 23 Years. Sue has decided to have a well-earned retirement to her much loved south coast of New South Wales. She will be missed and she says thank you all the patients she has gotten know over the many years.

Sue saying thank you to all the patients. Yia Sou!

She has not totally left the practice and will have casual work, from her new home, to remotely help with ordering, answering the phone and following up on patients and other administration matters when needed.

Then the mouth rounds off with yours truly in Dentist NOT At Large – Covid Finally Got Me and a blog on that mutating virus with Arcturus – New COVID-19 Subvariant.

June

June in 2023 was the case of where did that swelling from…

Dentistry is often detective work, like an oral Sherlock Holmes. Often things are not what they seem, such as referred pain. This case is not all swellings are what they appear to be.

Swelling on first molar, or is it? Xray with gutta percha shows otherwise

The end this quarter of the year was to announce Denture Adhesive – Poligrip To The Rescue. Poligrip is a denture adhesive to prevent movement of the denture on the gum, especially for minor changes of its fit to underlying bone and/gums. It can also be used for new dentures to avoid ulcers during the settling in period.
