Eradicating the causes involves internal treatment of the root canal itself but also eliminating external issues.
Rubber dam is used to keep out further external microorganisms during the internal treatment of the tooth. It also protects the patient from the chemicals and instruments we use.
The other measure is to eradicate microorganisms that have already entered the body with antibiotics. The antibiotics arrive via the blood stream. Please follow instructions for maximum effectiveness!
However if there is an abscess, the pus needs to be drained. Pus means no blood stream in that area so antibiotics won’t get in.
Once the swelling has gone and the canal is cleaned chemically and physically, it is dried and sealed with materials that are seen on an X-ray. The filling is placed as a final seal to the tooth.
