The most important thing to remember is that micro-organisms cause infection. Some how the the varous types of bacteria have entered the body via the root canal. So there are three aspects of eradicating the causes.
We will explore the seal of the tooth for this week’s blog. The decay was not obvious under the filling at first, but when source of the infection was figured out, then, the filling was removed to find a “soup” of bacteria. This all had to be removed before cleaning the root canal.
It was a surprising the amount of decay that was found and the opening it created in the tooth and then into the root canal.
Once the root canal space had its inital treatement (next week’s blog), a soft temporary material was placed to seal the root canal space from the external mouth environment and allow access back into the root canal for fruther treatment.
A further temporary harder wearing filling material was placed to fill and seal the loss of tooth structure. This prevents a food trap and also makes it comfortable to the patient’s tongue and cheek.
For the next visit on the tooth, access is drilled though the harder temporary filling, to expose the softer material over the root canal. This material is shaken out with the ultrasonic cleaner, thereby not removing more tooth structure.
The sealing of the tooth will allow further root canal treatment to be successful. This means no more bacteria to come to the party, and to starve the unwanted guests of nutrients.
