A wonderful social event has come around again for my son James.
Dance for Ability event, this time it’s a Salsa Night on top of Sydney @ 37th floor!
The company Ernest and Young came on board with the venue of top of their building in George Street at Circular Quay. What amazing views! Great catering, and many dressed up people helping the guests of the evening, including my son James, having a wonderful time.
We met the sister of the founding organiser Jonothon Hopkirk, who inspired this initiative for adults with special needs. She has Down’s syndrome and he wanted her to have a safe environment to have fun rather than staying at home.
Social opportunities logistically can be limited for people with intellectual disabilities and funding also presents an issue. Dance for Abilities vision is to host events for people with intellectual disabilities in the same venues that we ‘all’ like to attend with the same frills that we ‘all’ take for granted when socialising. This also allows the interaction between those who get involved offering their services and those that have a disability which helps to build a positive familiarity in an often, segregated society.
The Salsa dancer got the crowd going with their flare, dance routines, costumes, music and personalities. The DJ spun other tunes for more dancing as well. It was good to meet many people who gave up their time for such a great event.
Great night for Dance for Abilities! Check out their Facebook page and website http://www.danceforabilities.com.au/
