The causes of mouth breathing may be temporary or permanent; the end result is a dry mouth. There are factors that need to be considered that may make the dryness of the mouth worse.
Essentially mouth breathing makes the saliva less moist.
A dry mouth essentially means the saliva is less watery in its flow.
Certain medications cause dry mouth themselves. Sometimes the doctor can change the medication so the dry mouth side effect is reduced.
Drinking caffeine, found in coffee, and many soft drinks also affects the water-like character of saliva.
Underlying medical conditions need to be treated or managed – especially diabetes.
Even a blocked duct in salivary gland should be treated to allow proper flow of saliva.
If we have to deal the a mouth that is less moist and protective of itself then the following needs to be done:
- To prevent decay and gum and bad breath problems:
- To aid in swallowing, eating and talking:
Regularly see your Medical Doctor or Specialist for check-ups and proper management of any underlying conditions and follow their instructions!
Finally, keep the dentist informed as everything can be relevant to proper dental care and treatment. The mouth is not isolated from the body!
