One of the most common complaints patients come in to see the dentist about is sensitivity of the teeth.
Tooth sensitivity usually occurs when the second layer of the tooth called the dentine is exposed. This is because the dentine contains channels that communicate with the underlying nerve of the tooth.
Scenarios when this can occur include:
- Over brushing: causing abrasion lesions along the gum line that expose the dentine of tooth and root surfaces
- Decay: either new cavities or recurrent decay underneath existing restorations
- Grinding/Bruxism: over time patients can grind away the outer enamel layer of the teeth to expose dentine
- Erosion: the presence of acid from reflux or from external food and drink can wear away the outer enamel surface of teeth as well
To help diagnose what the most likely cause, or sometimes it can even be a combination of causes, is contributing to a patient’s sensitivity we recommend coming in for a full examination and having a chat with your friendly dentist.
