What to do after surgical extractions
- Bite on the gauze for 45 minutes.
- Use an ice pack (or frozen vegetables) for the next hour – on for 10 minutes and off for 20 minutes. This reduces the tendency to swelling.
- Take pain killers as prescribed at the correct time before the anaesthetic wears off.
- Avoid on the day very hot drinks (let them cool down slightly), excessive exercise (this can raise your blood pressure) and aggressive rinsing.
- By all means rinse very gently with warm water and salt on the day.
- In the next couple of days, continue to ake pain killers as prescribed.
- If pain persists for more than a few days, or your swelling becomes hard (rather than like a fluid filled bag eg water bottle) then contact us.
